KPI: Oh No! The Reality.

“KPIs, a.k.a Key Performance Indicators, are like the bathroom scales of an organization. They’re there to tell you how well or not-so-well things are going. Just like scales, sometimes we like what we see, sometimes we don’t, and sometimes we question whether they’re telling the truth!

Now, imagine your bathroom scales always showing you as 20 pounds lighter. Sounds like a dream, right? But that’s just what KPIs might be doing to your business! They could be saying “Everything’s perfect!” while your company is secretly gaining the business equivalent of love handles. Now, why would they do such a thing? Here are a few sneaky reasons:

  • They’re measuring the wrong stuff. It’s like judging your health solely on your shoe size.
  • They’re stuck in the past. Using outdated KPIs is like using an abacus in the iPhone era.
  • They’re on a completely different page. If your KPIs aren’t in line with your business goals, it’s like trying to read a book upside down.
  • They’re not actionable. Like having a car with no wheels.
  • They’re not backed by accurate data. Like making a weather forecast by looking at a painting.

To avoid falling into the sneaky traps of these deceptive little metrics, make sure everyone in your organization understands what KPIs are and why they’re important. Make it as clear as that annoyingly catchy pop song on the radio that won’t stop playing.

Also, remember to give your KPIs a regular health check. See how they’re performing, tweak them a bit if needed. Keeping your KPIs up to date is like going to the gym — a bit of effort now saves a lot of trouble later.

And finally, don’t let KPIs be the lone wolf. They’re part of a bigger pack — your performance management system. Think of this system as a symphony orchestra. Sure, the KPIs might be the first violins, but you still need the rest of the orchestra for a full performance. By using a mix of financial and operational metrics alongside KPIs, you’ll have a better view of your business performance. Like swapping a telescope for a panoramic camera lens.

So, please remember, to handle KPIs with care. They might seem like your best friends, but remember, even rose-tinted glasses can’t turn a donkey into a unicorn!”
